India Announces $47 Billion Digital Infrastructure Investment — Largest in the Country's History

By Global DeskApril 13, 2026 · 5 min read

The Indian government has announced a $47 billion investment in digital infrastructure over the next five years, the largest such commitment in the country's history.

The plan includes: building 200 AI-ready data centres, deploying 5G to 95% of the population, establishing 50 AI research labs at public universities, and creating a national digital identity system for 1.4 billion citizens.

Prime Minister Modi described the investment as 'India's ticket to the fourth industrial revolution.' The country is positioning itself as an alternative to China for technology manufacturing and services.

The data centre component is particularly ambitious. India currently has approximately 1,100 MW of data centre capacity, compared to 4,500 MW in the US. The plan would add 3,000 MW by 2031.

International investors are taking notice. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have all announced expanded India operations in 2026, collectively committing over $25 billion in additional investment.
