Microsoft to Allow Windows 11 Update Pausing for Unlimited Duration — Feature Coming Soon

By Software DeskApril 12, 2026 · 3 min read

Microsoft is preparing to allow Windows 11 users to pause system updates for as long as they wish, removing the previous maximum pause limit.

TechRadar reports the change comes after persistent user complaints about forced update cycles disrupting enterprise workflows. The policy reversal is one of Microsoft's most significant quality-of-life concessions to power users in years.

Previously, Windows 11 users could pause updates for a maximum of 35 days. After that period, the system would force-install all pending updates — often at the least convenient time.

The new policy, expected to roll out in the Windows 11 24H2 update, will allow indefinite pausing with a prominent warning about security risks. Microsoft will display a persistent notification reminding users that their system is not receiving security patches.

Enterprise IT administrators have welcomed the change. Many organisations maintain their own update schedules and found the 35-day limit unnecessarily restrictive. The new policy gives them full control over when updates are applied.
