SpaceX Starlink Direct-to-Cell Now Covers 60% of the US — T-Mobile Users Get Satellite Texts Nationwide

By Telecom DeskApril 12, 2026 · 4 min read

SpaceX's Starlink direct-to-cell service, offered through T-Mobile, now covers approximately 60% of the contiguous United States.

The service allows standard T-Mobile smartphones to send and receive text messages via Starlink satellites in areas with no cellular coverage — no special hardware required.

Voice calls and data are expected to be added by late 2026. Current testing shows voice quality comparable to a poor cellular connection — functional but not high-fidelity.

The service has been credited with saving lives in remote areas. T-Mobile reports that Starlink-enabled emergency texts have been used in over 200 search-and-rescue situations since launch.

Competitors are watching closely. AT&T has partnered with AST SpaceMobile, while Verizon is developing its own satellite connectivity solution. The race to eliminate cellular dead zones is accelerating.
