Spotify has expanded its AI DJ feature to generate entirely new musical compositions tailored to individual listeners' preferences — music that has never been created by any human artist.
The feature uses Spotify's AI to analyse a listener's taste profile and create original tracks in similar styles. Users can request 'more upbeat,' 'darker,' or 'acoustic' variations in real time.
The music industry response has been swift and hostile. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issued a statement calling the feature 'a direct threat to the livelihoods of millions of musicians.'
Spotify argues that AI-generated music is complementary, not competitive. 'We're creating music for moments when no existing song quite fits,' the company said. 'This doesn't replace the need for human artistry.'
The legal implications are murky. Current copyright law was not designed for AI-generated content. Several lawsuits are expected, and the US Copyright Office is conducting a formal review of AI and creative works.
